Lake Michigan Anthology

Theodore Vaida (Isabella Michel)
I lived as an imposter
A Catholic
A Vaida
No family in Italy
Driven to make money in the U.S.
All I wanted was to protect my wife and kids
Mussolini and Antisemitism were rising to power
We had to get out
We weren’t safe anymore
Canada to New Jersey to Chicago
I opened a factory here before bringing my wife and kids
War broke out
My two sons, now old enough to fight, left us
And never returned
My daughter, Claire Carson, died young and tragically
My wife left me and the rest of the kids we had
All of this would have never happened
If I hadn’t denied everything about myself
My religion
My family
My name
We’d be nothing
We’d be rotting in mass graves alongside all the other Jews
My lies saved my family who fell apart
My family not knowing of my lies lived on ignorantly
I died as an imposter
